Escape From Alcatraz Triathlon next Sunday in San Francisco.

I hope next year I will get back to competing in Escape, again. Next Sunday my Foundations World Team has two teams entered. World Team One should come in first place again as defending 2010 Champions.

World Team One will be composed of:

Ray Velasco of Alameda, CA. has been 64th out of the water in the past.
Dr. Randy Stafford of Palo Alto will fill in for me on the Bike.
Chris Domine of San Mateo will run our anchor leg.

World Team Two will be composed of:

Steve Fratus for the swim leg.
Jerry Benterou of Livermore on the Bike
Heather Bostrom of Alameda on the Run.

Two weeks ago SBS TV was in Scottsdale to film a documentary to air in June.
On Saturday we shot the swimming segment and some interviews at my home and in Ling and Louie's Restauarnt.
Sunday AM we shot the cycling segment and in the PM my Skype visit with the Bradys from their Cape Cod home.
In June I should receive a DVD copy.

Have a happy healthy Memorial Day.

Good Luck to my Lady Sun Devils in the upcoming College Softball World Series.

Thousands of Athletes to Descend on Madison for the 2010 National Kidney Foundation’s U.S. Transplant Games

New York, NY (November 4, 2009) – They haven't hit the court or track yet and already this group of athletes has performed death–defying feats. They all carry an inner trophy – a new organ that qualifies them for the dream team in the game of life. Their ultimate trial will kick off at the 2010 National Kidney Foundation’s U.S. Transplant Games in Madison, Wisconsin.

The Games, to be held July 30–August 4, 2010, are an Olympic–style event for athletes who have received life–saving organ transplants of every type – kidney, liver, heart, lung, pancreas and bone marrow. Transplant athletes will compete for gold, silver and bronze medals in 12 different sports, including track and field, swimming, tennis, basketball, cycling and golf. Presented biennially by the National Kidney Foundation since 1990, the U.S. Transplant Games draw participants from all over the country who are organized into 50 state teams.

Both the Alliant Energy Center and the University of Wisconsin Recreational Sports Facilities, will serve as the sports venues. Event hosts include the Greater Madison Convention and Visitors Bureau and the National Kidney Foundation of Wisconsin.

“More than 107,000 Americans are currently on the waiting list for life–saving organ transplants and 18 people die each day while waiting. The Transplant Games visually showcase the success of transplantation, demonstrating the life–saving power of organ donation,” says John Davis, CEO of the National Kidney Foundation. “We hope our spirited competition will slam home the message that every American should consider becoming an organ donor.”

Games sponsors include the Greater Madison Convention & Visitors Bureau, Dane County Sports Fund, City of Madison Event Assistance Fund, Wisconsin Department of Tourism, UW Health Children's Hospital and Health System and Froedtert Hospital Foundation.

Attendance at the 2010 U.S. Transplant Games are expected to reach 7,000 people, including transplant athletes, their families and friends and families of organ donors. Athlete participants range in age from two to 85. In addition to athletic competition, the Games will feature special ceremonies honoring living organ donors and families of deceased organ donors. The Games will also offer four days of special workshops for donor families and an educational program for professionals involved in transplantation. A special Celebrate Life Night will be held at Willow Island at the Alliant Energy Center on Friday, July 30 and a Community 5 K Run to promote organ donation, will be held on Saturday, July 31, 2010.

Finishing 55 th overall was a most interesting experience but so good just to ride again.

February 22, 2010 "Ten Years After."

I just shake my head as I recount my journey from a massive heart attack Easter Sunday, March 1999.
The years events of 1999 through 2000 are a blur and distant memory of "from whence I came." The congestive heart failure brought about by my heart attack damage. Precipitated by my jaw infection, then Pneumonia. Then in September of 1999 as my organs failed the implantation of my Total Artificial Heart as I literally expired. My month in a coma, followed by Impaema and two life saving Thoracotomies. Learning to talk, walk, eat, think and all motor skills to be relearned. My two videos shot while bionic on the SynCardia TAH-T looking like a pale scare crow. Somehow fighting to live and finally get healthy enough just to be listed for a new heart.

The early morning of February 22, 2000 as my night nurse woke me up to let me know "we might have a new heart for you today." Later that morning into the OR for my life saving heart transplant.
Wow!

The Friday before the Rock & Roll Marathon the wonderful race expo takes place at the Phoenix Civic Plaza. So nice to visit with old friends like Hook & Lake Fox 10 News Anchors. John being a big part of our 2006 Emmy for "the gift of life and then some."

Wandering around the race expo a quick stop at the Oakley booth and visit with Legend Greg Welch. Melbournes multiple World Triathlon Champ and one of the fittest Athletes ever. Now living with a pace maker.

One of the Expo Symposiums had quite a crew of World Greats.
Matt Reed, Dean Karnazes, Deana Kastor and Ryan Hall as they spoke about training, their upcoming seasons, etc.

Sunday morning January 17, 2010 at the VIP Pre Race breakfast Bill with Dean Karnazes Mr Ultra Distance Runner and Bill's job to escort Dean for the day. At 6:30 AM the 8 K to precede the 7:40 AM race start of the Marathon for a 50 K Total for Dean and 150 others in their Ultra Marathon that day. The Marathon and half had an entry of over 32,000 for the largest Marathon in the World.

Bill, (Captain Team USA Cycling for the 2007 Thailand & 2009 Australia WTG Games) recently at Landis Cyclery checking out a new 2010 Trek Madonne for the upcoming season. Dave Kuhlman and Perry are the best keeping Bill on the road throughout the year with the best of Trek and Zipps.

We arrived at the Tucson Civic Center on Friday to pick up our race packets and visit with sponsors, friends and associates.

Race Director Richard DeBernadis brought us over to the book signing to introduce Chris, Jane and me to Greg Lemond and Jane & Greg W who collaborated on a Champions book.

Having watched Greg Lemond in several Tour De France races it was nice to visit with him.

He told us of his mother passing away waiting for a life saving Liver Transplant and that he lives with limited kidney function. Probably needing a Kidney Transplant one day.

El Tour De Tucson is usually the end of our Cycling Race Season each year. For me it is just the beginning as I have been under the weather since Spring 2008. This year El Tour had a total entry of over 8,200 Cyclists for the different race segments of 109, 85, 65 or 36 miles. The whole adventure is always a highlight of the year.
Coming back from 18 months I would like to forget, just training was a treat much less competing on Team SynCardia Cycling. Riding well with only 9 previous rides on the bike leading up to the race.

The 36 mile version of El Tour begins at 12:30 PM in Oro Valley, AZ.
With Kidney TX Chris Paxton visiting from KC, Mo. and competing in his second El Tour.
We checked our bikes as we prepared for the start.

Chris had flown in on Thursday morning from KC. Our first stop to Landis Cyclery in Tempe to visit with Dave Kuhlman, GM of Landis who so helps and supports our efforts.
Dave had arranged Chris's new Trek Madone and Chris needed a new Bike computer.
THat afternoon we stopped by the Scottsdale Shea Landis with great help from Perry adjusting Chris's new computer. Perry had also put brand new Zipp 303's on my Madone for the race.

My bike rode like a dream.

Also riding with us Liver recipient (World Champion Swimmer) team mate Dianne Miller in her first El Tour on Bike Patrol as she is a trained Ski Patrol first responder.
We stayed at the Millers lovely Oro Valley home.

The long and winding road to the finish downtown 36 plus miles later.

Ride by John Miller Diannes Husband and my lovely Girl Friend Jaynee our crack Photo & Video crew.

Round the final corner and sprint to the finish line unofficialy 128th out of 1,400 Cyclists.

After each major race it is always so much fun to gather with Team SynCardia after the finish to visit and chat.

Team Director Sportif Dr. Marvin Slepian and other friends and team mates.

Saturday night brought a lovely celebratory dinner at the Millers.

Sunday morning a quick breakfast fun at Claire's Cafe in Catalina, AZ.
Friend, cyclist, Kidney TX, Brain Cancer survivor joining us for Breakfast and new friend also Claire Johnson, Executive Chef and owner of the Cafe.

Then back to Scottsdale. Time for an awesome Lunch compliments of Chris and Jack Stack Q from KC, Mo.

So Chris could unpack, break down his bike, back into the Bike Pro for the trip home.

Back to sky harbor phoenix airport to complete an almost perfect weekend.

June 14th will bring the 2009 "Escape From Alcatraz" Deemed the Toughest most Technical Triathlon in the World it is something to respect and be in awe of.
Last year in the 55 degree water 3.5 mph current (2,100 exceptional Triathletes by qualification or invitation only) Irish Transplant Athlete Turlough O'Hagan excited the water about 96th place about 2.5 minutes behind two time Winner Olympian Andy Potts.

Followed by Geof McCracken (Ireland),Ray Velasco (USA)and Steve Deakin MBE another UK Athlete on our World Team. Our friends at the CAF lost Stevies prosthetic legs for over 10 minutes he searched before the run to Marina Green.

If you look in the blue outfit to the left of Steve you will see our friend Sara Reinersen chasing him.
Steve was recently honored with the MBE from Queen Elizabeth.

After the tough cold swim and run up to the Marina Green from Saint Francis Yacht Club it is the Cyclist's time. John Fairbanks here with US Army PR People. John the only Heart Transplant on Active Duty with our US Army.

Next was Dennis Lee of Alameda for TeamIV.
Then Team III runner from Liverpool, Kidney TX Kathy Cross totally lost it as she ran down the finish chute
as she heard her Daughter shout " Go MUM."
Stevie D. had secretly arranged it all.

Team Number I had John Fisher of London, England come in next as the time hunting for Stevies Legs never was made up.
John does some great Donor Awareness Activities in the UK and competes all over the Globe in Major Running Events.

On Tuesday April 14, 2009 we visited the Arizona State Capitol For a Donor & Recipient Honoree Garden on the lawn in front of the House of Representaties.

What a Beautiful Day and Venue for this Event.

So nice to be one of the Honorees for the Garden.

Some of you might remember Kirby Puckett another Scottsdale Recipient Former MLB Star.

My job this year was to Escort the Race Leaders to the Finish.
Then the Race Director asked me to Escort Josh Cox when he crossed the Marathon Finish Line over to ASU Sun Devil Track for another 5 Miles in his World Record Attempt ast 50 K. If You Look to the right of Josh You will see me behind him on the Track.

Moses Kigen of Kenya won the men’s title in his marathon debut. His final sprint was good for a half second victory over Ethiopian Tekeste Kebede. Kigen, 25, won the race in 2 hours, 10 minutes, 36 seconds, the second-best time in the six year history of the event.

“It feels great to win in my first marathon,” said Kigan. “The course is fantastic, flat and very fast. The running conditions were perfect. I’m going to come back for the course record next year.”

Nearly the entire men’s field jockeyed for position over the first few miles of the race. A lead pack of seven runners then began to click off sub 5-minute miles. After the 10 mile mark, mile splits were 4:51, 4:53 and 4:44, with a half marathon split of 1:05:09. At the 25K mark, Kigan, Kebde, and fourth place finisher Keteme Nigusse of Ethiopia pulled away.

It was a three man race until the water station at mile 22, when the pace caught up to Nigusse and he fell back. Kigan and Kebede ran side-by-side until the final few meters. Kigen, who also finished third overall at the 2008 Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon in San Jose, received $20,000 for his first place effort. Defending Champion Michael Aish of New Zealand finished sixth overall.

Over eight years after setting a marathon PR of 2:13:55 in Chicago, American Josh Cox set a new USA Track & Field record for 50 kilometers. With an official time of 2:47:17, Cox bettered the previous 50K record by over four minutes set in 2002 by Alex Tilson.

“My legs felt fine, but I was having a hard time keeping fluids down,” said Cox, who leading up to the race had his sights set on the world best. “It was tough out there, but the crowd support really helped, especially once I got going around the track. I was training such that even though it was an off day, I still got the American record.”
Cox overcame two bathroom breaks and an upset stomach, which plagued him over the first 20 miles of the race. His marathon split of 2:20:32 was his best time in the last two years and good for ninth place overall. His final lap on the track was clocked at 71 seconds.

“Marathon is still my sport and 2012 is my goal,” added Cox, referring to the Olympic Games in London. “But like when running 50 miles helped my performance in college track, these types of efforts will hopefully help my marathon running. I’d love to come back again and try to lower my time.”

Next The NBA All Star Game here in Phoenix Mid February. Then Feb. 17th we leave for "The Tour of Califonia." We will get to train in So Cal then No Cal and then back to So Cal. As some of the Worlds very best Cyclists race from Sacremento to San Diego. Hope to visit with Lance Armstrong in hs first race back in the US. In January Astana and Lance will race in "Tour Down Under" in Adelaide, South Australia. In 2004 with Team USA we raced there as I set an Australian Games Record First Overall in the Time Trial.

Saturday November 22, 2008 was the 26 th El Tour De Tucson.
What a crazy week and weekend!

El Tour De Tucson usually ends my Season but this year in September I knew I was sick. Another Flaming Hoop to Jump through. Now on the good side of dealing with Severe Pulmonary Fibrosis I can begin my next Rehab in preparation for the 2009 Season and World Championships in August in Australia.

The Town of Oro Valley for the Race start at 12:30 PM. Usually starting in the front row I started back in the pack of about 400 Cyclists. Usually one of the first off the line I had to wait and wait as we had to first get to the start line.

Preparing for a turn near the start. Not in the front pack just meant more squirell type cyclists to deal with. There were a few crashes and a bad car and truck accident for several riders. Thank God I circum navigated all of the crashes.

Visiting at the Pre Race Expo with Greg D. my Trek rep as he explaineed about next years 2010 Trek Models with Lance Armstrong Input and imprint.

After the race we played The Wedding Crashers at this little Hispanic Wedding.

Friday Oct. 17,2008 I get to go into the Hospital for a Lung Biopsy.
After a month of feeling off, not right. Since the Swimming Competition in Pittsburgh in Mid July I picked up some bug.
Time to figure it out and clear it up!

I know I picked up some bug all day wet at the Carnegie Mellon Pool in a Body Suit.

Hopefully by Monday the Cultures of my Lung Biopsy will show what is growing?

I have been run down and tired the last month. So after being in killer shape I get to begin again.

But the option of doing is always The Best.
Tune next week as I hope to start the next page in my Drama.

Time to prepare for Treasure Island & El Tour!

Treasure Island San Francisco Intl Tri is next followed by El Tour De Tucson.
After training and having a good summer Championship Season I seemed to have picked up a bug in Pittsburgh in July.
I'm thinking spending all day at the Carnegie Mellon Pool in my wet Speedo Fast Skin and the burn out of the Games Expierience I picked up an infection.

I have had some very flat days like the Cycling day in Pit.
Recovery and being exhausted really became an issue about three weeks back.
Time to go to my Cardiologist and find out what is going on.

When you are an immuno suppressed Athlete you are always pushing your self, tired and run down. But my body could tell this was different.
Ok Bill go take a chest XRay.
Hum, scarring on the Lungs that weren't there in May?
Go see a Pulmonary Specialist.
How about a Cat Scan?
Finally you can start these space age Antibiotics to kill the Infection!
But run over to the Hospital for Blood Work, Sputum Culture and Urine analysis.
Well, the Good News.
No Cancer!
No Valley Fever!
No Rejection !
We're not sure what is yet but keep taking the Antibiotics!
Yesterday I started easing back into my training.
The previous weekend long rides were way too hard and way too long to recover.
So now working on the other side.
The infection seems to be waning, can I kill it?
The weather has finally cooled.
We ride here in ridiculus Heat and Phoenix has a Huge Brown Cloud so not too healthy for serious outdoor Training.
Thank God nothing serious so far.
Going into this in the Best Shape of my Life time to regroup carefully recreating the fine line of between too much and not enough.
Thank God I can so shut up and move on.

Good To Be Back Home After IV Canadian National TX Games

Leaving Scottsdale, AZ. Early Sunday Morning August 3, 2008 for my 6 AM Flight to Windsor, Ontario.
The Venue for both Cycling Races and the 5 K Run were just Great as you raced along the Detroit River with Caesar's to the South and The Detroit Skyline to the North.

Taking off hard in the Road Race and attacking on each laps uphill I got far away from the pack and had a motor bike escort for a few laps. Then they began getting in the way and not going fast enough to stay in front of me.

After completing the 15 laps I began to cool down when the race Announcer said "One More Lap." Off I went worried I would not win and sprinted both last Laps.

After First Place Overall Gold and A New Canadian TX Games Record
CBC TV asked for an Interview.
Talking about Donor Awareness and all my great Canadian Friends.
I discussed the Games and "A Second Chance at Life."

Almost off to Canada for their IV National TX Games

Tuesday in Canada will be the Time Trial and Road Race. Yesterday on my way back home from TT Intervals up on DC Ranch up in the Hills I got Hit By A Car.
Thank God after fish tailing and sliding across Cactus Road I came to a stop in front of A Maricopa County Sheriff on Duty for the Road Construction. Almost a nightmare but just little achs and pains today with repairs done to my Bike that afternoon at my Bike Sponsor Landis Cyclery. One more tough workout tomorrow then pack & go.

In Pittsburgh or as I have learned "The Burgh." Fire Works after the
Pirates Baseball Game the first Friday Night in Pit.

Getting on the Blocks just before my First Race on Sunday the 100 Breast Stroke, First Place, Gold Medal, New US Games American Record by 4 Seconds.

Medals Presentatiom for My First of Three Gold Medals and American Records.
This first one Placed on my Donor Mother Paula Brady. "Because My Donor Family said YES, I am."
Number Two Gold was placed on My Donor's Father Stan Brady.
My Third Gold and Final American Record I kept.
Also A Silver Medal in the Mixed Freestyle Relay after Blowing My Flip Turn costing us another Gold. Oh Well!

And Then There was ONE. Fly Out Tomorrow.

Tomorrow we fly to Pittsburgh to represent the great state of Arizona.
This Year for the first time the Team will be a main force in the overall competition.

With only Two Days Left before leaving for our US Games, so far all goes well.
Above are a few shots from our time at the Beach in Pattaya after two weeks in Bangkok for the Worlds. It is hard to imagine a Year has passed. After the Beach we spent another week back in Bangkok as Tourists seeing all the sites.
Hope to get out on the Bike early tomorrow. With the Monsoon season here it has been hot and humid. Strange idea for most when you talk desert. Perfect to prepare for maybe 80 & humid in Pit.
Hope to get in the Pool in the PM tomorrow.
Then Team AZ meeting at 5:30 PM. Can the Zonies pull it off?

Getting ready to go for my Monthly Blood Work.
I guess it gives the Doctors a window on my World.
Oh My God only 18 Days until my first competition at our US National TX Games in Pittsburgh. Can I stay in one piece just minor nicks and problems to perform with my A+++ Game.

Two years ago coming through the Finish Line in the 20 K Road Race. Third in my age group in the group with the fastest times overall. A pitched battle just to Medal.

On the Cycling Podium twice for Bronze in the 5 K and 20 K. Hot, Humid but nothing like the Death Heat back Home!
Living in a Pizza Oven does have a purpose. For my Foreign Friends Think 50 + C.

Swimming in Edmonton, Alberta for the Canadian 2006 National TX Games.
One of Eleven Gold, One Silver, One Bronze. August 4, 2008 we go back to Canada to defend and visit our friends of the great white north.

For now stay healthy, can't add much more at this point but just stay sharp and actually begin prep for August 2009 Australia and our next Worlds.
Hopefully banking now what is needed for 2009.

Swimming Tune up for US National TX Games in Pittsburgh next month.
I get to see where my Swimming is with 3 weeks to go.
I get to race in my new Speedo Fast Skin.
I get to Visit with Coach Mike Troy, Meet Commisioner and Double Olympic Gold Medalist. Mike & his partner Mike Walker(Former Olympic Team swim Coach) who prepared me last summer for the Worlds in Thailand.

In my book now is the time to prepare for August 2009 in Australia our next World Games.

One of our Favorite Athletes on the Team is Steve Deakin from Warrington, kind of inbetween Manchester and Liverpool.
All week we joked about on the start Boat Stevie would take off his Legs and Tell the Crowd "The Sharks got me two years ago in Escape But I'm back."
Not True but great Fun. So Stevie swims ashore in 30:37 for the 1.5 Mile Swim.
Our friends at CAF said they would place Stevies legs at the shoe pickup on shore. THe next ten minutes no one could find Stevies legs. Being a trooper he kept his cool and waited and then legs on began the run to T1 on Marina Green.

Reflections on Last weeks Race 2008 Escape.

It's so good to be home and back in your Comfort Zone but last Weeks World TX Team Adventure is way High up on My Ricter Scale of Epic Fun. Getting out of town is always tough.
My son Billy drove me to the Airport. Me, my Bike Pro Case, uniforms for 20 and all the stuff I normally travel with.We invited the right Friends to get involved.
We covered a lot of bases and Had Camera Crews following us in our Journey. Scott Hester with his PBS Documentary. Jacob and others shooting for Local Cable Channel " Alameda Currents." The US Army covering Sgt. John Fairbanks when Major Luten in charge of PR Knew John was a PR Gem of Positive for our Army. And the Bill Wohl Foundation taking HD Video and great digital stills wherever we went.I have begun the Pictorial Story and it is already HUGE!
We came from near and far with Heart, Liver, Kidney, Bone Marrow Transplants.
A Chinese, Philipino, London and Liverpool Runner.SWimmers from Ireland two, Liverpool area, Warrington and Alameda. Cyclists from Palo Alto, Scottsdale, Livermore and Omaha.
Every where we went People would try to read what it said on our Hats, shirts and jackets.
WE DID GOOD!
Ray didn't kill us with his Tour Bus Operator Mentality but we did go all over the Bay Area.
Race Day we all showed up too!
If someone had not taken Stevie's legs World Team I would have been neck and neck with Teams II, III and IV.More then 10 minutes time went by before Steve could run from the St Francis Yacht Club up to Marina Greens.
A personal Perspective: In 2007 I did not have the proper Respect or Awe for this course and Event. I was a little more prepared this year but HUGE GRADES on some of the Cycling Course Hills brought me to my Knees.I managed to Survive and cut almost 5 Minutes off my last years Performance.

Sunday May 18, 2008 was The Tempe International triathlon. We had won the Men's Open Relay in 2007 but this year on a most Hot Windy day we finished Third in our Division, nineteenth overall across the Finish line with a Total entry of about 1,500.
Two Weeks To Escape.
After 117 F & 112 F this week we now have 50 degrees F out and I made it to the Pool yesterday. Getting ready to head there now.
Sundays Race really took it out of me. The first two laps were a breeze but the last two 10K's like a Death March. All practice and prep.

The Fun Never Ends. Another day in the Life!

After a busy work week I stopped by my Bike Sponsor Landis Cyclery to prep my Bike for the weekends second big open race of the season The Tour of Tucson's Mountains. Perry adjusted my Bike and put on some killer Zipp Carbon Fiber Race wheels.
Saturday morning I got to practice my warmup and check out the Bikes functions before packing and driving to Tucson. A stop in at the Race Expo and then on to John & Dianne Millers home in Oro Valley. Tired and run down and dealing with a Right sore Ham String I was ready for Sundays race. Last year I had spent the week in San Francisco with My Sponsor SynCardia at the International Society of Heart & Lung TX Surgeons Symposium.
Then back home for a 17 th place finish. This year I started in the Front Row per usual and was first off the line settling in behind the lead pack for the first part of the race.
About 4 miles in I watched two friends crash in front of me as some riders can't navigate safely in a race. About a mile later I let the lead pack go as the pace was burning me out too soon. I settled in and rode strong. We had heavy gusting head winds at several long stretches on the road and they ate me up Alive! I finished 5 minutes faster than last year and 29 th out of 237 entered. Another good practice race getting better dealing with heavy head winds.
Back to John & Dianne's for Lunch and watch the Suns beat San Antonio, Yeah!

Monday since it was a recovery week I scheduled my two day annual check up at UMC in Tucson.
Started with a ridiculus number of blood tests, now it was OR time for Surgery.
A Dual Heart Cath and Biopsy. After punching two small holes in your Femoral Artery they snake two fiber optic cameras up and around all your plumbing. Then they finish with another device to take a little heart sample to check for rejection.
Tuesday Day two Ultra sound and XRay to complete my Annual. Then up to visit friends at the Artificial Heart Office. Visting with a recent implantee of the Total Artificial Heart, trying to give a ray of hope to a scared to death patient, waiting for a new Heart!
Then tired and worn out back up to Oro Valley to pack and drive home.

My tire pressure light had been on for two days so I stopped by Discount Tires on my way home. They showed me a hairline crack in my custom left rear wheel.
Buy a new one and begin driving home as I receive a call from my TX Coordinator.

"Bill, raise your Sirulimus daily dose, your Biopsy shows REJECTION and drive back to the Hospital next Monday in Tucson for a 9:15 AM Biopsy.
OK!
The Fun Never Ends!

Weds. AM back to the Tire shop for my new wheel, then real tired and run down out to Gilbert for a Real Fun Donor Awareness afternoon.

Chris Klug a Liver TX, Olympic Medalist and some one I had met at the US Louisville Games in 2006 was riding with a group on a road ready Artic Cat across Arizona as the Group rode cross Country Promoting Donor Awareness.

Chris is Just a Great Real Guy that I remember watching on TV in 2002.
Just 9 months after his Liver TX he competed in The Salt Lake City Winter Olympics winning Bronze in the Snow Boarding Event.
We had a great time as we all talked and Chris signed Posters for everone who stopped by.
We all are part of a Newspaper story for Saturdays Arizona Republic.

Then Chris was brave enough to ride to the Airport in the Bill mobile for his flight home.
We got to talk a bit and look forward to seeing Chris in Pittsburgh in July.
Chris also plans to go to OZ in 2009 for the next Worlds.
Lets see if we can get Chris involved with our World Team as a Runner?

Tired and rundown and trying to comprehend Heart Rejection I plan to go to the Gym today.

If I feel real bad just two maybe shorter, easier workouts and if I perk up Three.

Need more Pool Time.

So Monday back to the Hospital for the dreaded Carotid Artery Biopsy Procedure.

FORD ARIZONA IRONMAN THIS WEEKEND

As the temperatures edge to about 95 F tomorrow for the Ironman it is tough.
Last year it was so windy.
All week it has been windy but the Heat is almost here.
Yesterday on an easy recovery ride I felt real good!
I think a good nights sleep, great training and diet are putting my Ducks in a row.

Today in a little bit I will take a nice two hour easy ride.
Maybe up into the Hills and around just north of me.
Tomorrow the Pro's go first in the Ironman I think 6:30 AM @ Tempe Towne Lake.
I might go down to watch and shoot some shots @ the swim and transitions.
Or I could help out on a Bike aid station just east of me.
112 miles on the Bike for the Ironman crews, interesting. Then run a marathon.
It will be hot.
Less then two months to Escape.
Time to suffer on some 17 & 18 % grades I know around here.
Also hope to restart my Pool time. I backed off for Tour De Phx.
Two weeks to TTM and my Annual for two days the day after the race.
It is usually hot & windy in Marana for TTM.
And then May 18 th Tempe International Tri.
We get to compete as defending Champs!
Should be interesting.

2008 El Tour De Phoenix is done!

Saturday was the first big open Cycling event of 2008. About 1,300 Cyclists entered overall and about 260 in the 25 mile race.
Starting in the front row I got cut off and stalled as the rider on my right banged wheels as we both slowly clipped in. The leaders were off and gone and I decided to just ride my race leading pack 2.
It was windy and hot but what gets your attention is Usery Pass.
About 11 miles into the race you hit a gradual up hill that runs for 5,600 meters at a 6 plus % grade most of the way.
It gets your attention and slows U down. Add a head wind to the grade and it is not fun!
My right calf and butt felt it and it was not fun!
I tried to relax and just ease uphill sitting in the top twenty!
3.5 miles later U get to the top and begin racing down the other side.
My new bike with the Zipp Wheels is scary fast so I descended just short of a mad man!
Again a head wind and about 4 or 5 sitting on my wheel!
Trying to work with the stronger riders in our group 4 of us rode past the right turn on University.
The cops on the course were Brain Dead and did not signal the turn.
We lost about 5 minutes as we turned just short of an extra mile south of the turn.
Time to play catch up and pass people U were in front of earlier.
I had looked forward to this part of the course because earlier and usually U get an East Tail Wind. I figured I could fly here.
Well I did catching and passing back into a wind.
As I repassed some they hopped on my wheel again and I got to pull them Again!
I didn't realy care because in the Big Triathlons and Time Trials U make your own way.
Probably this was the best part I rode.
At the finish one girl who sat on my wheel for about 10 miles said " You're a strong rider, Do U do Tri's."
Glad someone appreciated my work.
My goal was top 15. So with the several misadventures and no one really to sit on and get pulled I was beat by the final two straight aways. I wound up 30th overall and second in my Age Group.
On to TTM the 27 th in Tucson. I will be more prepared and race better.

But overall it was a good tough effort for the first of the year.

Easter Sunday this weekend so I can take a Thankful Moment and ponder where the first three months have flown by!
Other then a bit tired and run down its very hard to complain about anything.
Life is Way Great!
If I can even Comprehend Easter Sunday 1999 when after a Massive heart Attack my current Adventure Began!
Whew!
No Way Jose!

Yesterday was a scheduled for Rest & Recovery but I figured I better hit the Pool.
OK for my Fourth day back in the Pool!. Swam an easy 1,750 meters and worked.

I guess this weekend I should take the time and try rethink Easter Sunday 1999 living at the New Mayo Hospital in Scottsdale!

Al I can do is shake my Head Keep Marching and go to the Gym for two more Workouts.
Only two weeks until El Tour De Phoenix.

84 Days to Escape_ June 8, 2008

We are now inside of 3 months to Escape. Booked my Airline Ticket yesterday as I will fly into Oakland on Weds. June 4 in the PM.

Just nineteen days to our first Major Local Race Sat. April 5 th "El Tour De Phoenix".
With a 5,600 meter gradual climb about 10 miles in it is always a tough race. Three years back I was 8th over all and last year I know first in my Age Group. Shooting for top 15 finish! A bit tired and sore but pretty far along for this time of year.
Getting much better with 5 long Hill Repeats on Saturday.
Work & R & R day Today!

My body could use the break.
Then the Tour of Tucson's Mountains the end of the month.
May 18 th the Tempe International triathlon where we are defending Champs in the Mens Open relay.
And then Escape!
Better get back to work!

My Eigth Transversary Friday Feb. 22, 2008

On Friday February 18, 2000 I had been at the University Medical Center as
"A Terminally Ill FDA Experiment"
for 155 Days.

This stay at UMC started, when all my Organs failed and Scottsdale Shea shipped me to Tucson on a wing and a Prayer.
All on September 13, 1999, that night, my native heart was removed and I was implanted with a
CardioWest
Total Artificial Heart.
In an attempt to Save My Life.

The 400 pound box I was tethered to in this shot behind the Hospital in the Fall of 1999.
Back to that Friday afternoon 2/18/00.
I was part of a Video shoot by Novartis Pharmaceutical for their Spring 2000 Transplant Video Journal. Oprah's Dr. Memet Oz appeared on that video too and former Olympian Carl Lewis.

My life tethered to a 400 pound box ,electric and oxygen, was blood tests, bleeding times, X Rays, IV's, surgeries,journeys to the Gym and sitting in the Sun outside for an hour.
Pretty much a Bionic Vegetable!

Just outside of Tucson to the East on US Route 10 is Benson, AZ.
It's claim to fame is the Western Motif back ground and Rail Road Tracks that have graced
so many Movies and TV shows for their back drop.

On the set of UPN TV's first Reality show
Brady Michael's had worked on the rigging
for an upcoming stunt for the TV show.
"I Dare You_The Ultimate Challenge."
Brady was preparing rigging on a train car that would allow him to Para Sail behind a moving Train to a height of 600 feet free fall and Parachute on to another moving Train.

That Saturday 2/19/00 as Brady started down the ladder for the final time that day, the ladder now un leashed from the train car.
He slipped and fell.
Hitting is skull on a piece of River Rock and he was taken to TMC in dire condition.

I will never forget the year I spent as an almost
inanimate object personally supporting
the Hospital Systems of Arizona.

I remember Doug, my Engineer coming into my room early on the morning of February 22 nd, after my Nurse an hour earlier woke me to
"We think we have a Heart for You."

That morning as I was wheeled into surgery I remembered all my misadventures of the last 159 days Bionic, as the worse Cardiac Case ever in their Program History. Now 28 years and over 800 Heart Transplants.

Oh My God!

To just Be again.

Much less to work at what I love,

see my kids grow up

and be able to train,

one to four workouts per day.

Yes,
Ride, Swim, Lift, Stretch, Core and occasionally Run.

With Work in between.

Our Amgen 2008 Tour of California Adventure!

Good Bye Phoenix!
A quick stop @ a Costco Gas station in PHX on our way out of town. Knowing it will be about a dollar a gallon more for gas in Cali.
First big trip for my new rig!

Weds. Feb. 20 in the late PM we pull into Kim & Julie, My friend Tony's sister and Brother-in-law in Griffith Park, LA.
We made it in one piece so far bikes in the back!

After hours of sitting in the car we hike up the roads to the Famous Griffith Park Observatory to decompress our legs.

Then back to Kim & Julies for Dinner and
Sun's VS Laker's on TV
with Shaq against his old team.

Laker's win and we look out on a
Total Lunar Eclipse!

Thursday morning we ride Hill Repeats in LA up the back road to Griffith Observatory.
Then the long ride north to San Luis Obispo (SLO) for the finish of Thursdays Stage 5 of the
Amgen Tour of California.
Wet Tony!

Several hours before the expected finish we camp out in the front row on the final turn before the sprint to the finish. Nothing like standing in the pouring cold rain for hours during the Flu season!
Three unbelievable things that day, as the lead rider for Rock Racing passes us
on his way to the finish!
1) No one crashed and burned on this wicked corner to the finish with big white painted lines and a huge man hole cover!
2) A young Canadian Rider broke away and stayed away to finish in front of the Peloton. They almost always get caught by the angry mob chasing them!

3) Cold, Wet and Tired
we didn't get SICK!

After the race, onto Arroyo Grande to stay with
Tony's Parents for a few nights.

Now it was Friday morning February 22, 2008 the Eighth Anniversary of my Heart Transplant. On this day @ UMC in Tucson.
So many thoughts went through my mind as we went out to ride in the rain, cold, muddy roads of No Cal.
I remembered my year of illness and Hospital Incarcerations.
Being one of the very Lucky ones to survive all the scrapes and bumps and bruises of Cardiac ICU. On this day as my Donor Family Grieved their unfathomable loss. My Family drove to Tucson to visit with Dad as he made it with a new Heart and returned from surgery to his room.

We rode to the Beach, along country roads as I pondered how far I had come.
On the way back, Tony threw in an 18% grade hill just before we stopped for a Caffeine Break @ a local coffee House.

How had I survived? I should Ask Lance his take?

Now driven to Help and Make a Difference!

How had I made it back to be able to Live, much less compete all over the World?

Saturday in Solvang, CA. Little Denmark, US Version.

In Solvang with Tony and his Dad to watch the Time Trial. Rain on the way but nothing but Sun as we got there.
The Time Trial, "The Race of Truth" would pitch little local Levi, last years overall winner against the very best Time Trialer's in the world!
On paper the likes of Zabriskie, Miller, Cancellera and other specialist would eat Levi for Lunch!

With big fire works on the horizon we broke out our

whippet assistant and

secret weapon, our lucky photographer.

As the Time Trial headed to the last starters, one of the Astana Team on the latest greatest

Originally, Friday Night we were to go to the Heart Concert in LA and film the first part of the movie on Brady & Me on my 8 th Transversary. Heart's management shot down our Friday Night Request.

On to Saturday and the Race goes from Santa Barbara to Santa Clarita!

We woke up and rode the Arroyo Grande Roads again.

No Rain today, Yea!

VIP back stage Passes for the
Heart Concert that night in Riverside, Indio, CA.

Heart has always been one of my favorites with
a great sound and songs.

and talk for awhile.

I vaguely remember the week before my Transplant sitting in the Cardiac Wing ,Bionic, cranking their song
"Heartless"
as depression of living in the Hospital so long had set in!
What a treat to be their guests and meet them!

Sunday would bring the Final Stage of The 2008 Amgen Tour of California. Santa Clarita to Pasadena, finishing with 6 laps around the Rose Bowl in the pouring rain.
Another wild day of racing with a single leader chased by a group of ten that dwindled to McCartney, Southerland, Creed and Hincapie.
George making his move in the last 1/2 lap for the stage win.
How fitting as I wore George's personal new Defunct
T Mobile Winter wear.
When Disco broke up George signed with T Mobile, it left racing and I wound up with his new Team Gear for my winter Training,made for him with his name on the back.
George Migrated to Team High Road and had a great win on the final stage.

I used my Umbrella and George's great stuff kept me warm & dry!

Levi after third @ 2007 Tour De France won his second in a row Tour of Cali to get his season off to a killer start. Now if only pro racing wakes up and lets Levi, Alberto & Astana enter this year Tour De France.

Monday morning we got up early and headed out for one last ride in Cali.

No Rain, Yea!

We decided to do Hill Repeats on LA's Griffith Park Observatory back road. 12 %, 14 % to 22.4% grade at its worst.
Great practice for Escape!

As we headed up about 6:30 in the AM I noticed a few hooded sweat shirts on the road with Team Pacquaio.

When I saw more than one I knew it was his team and he was out for his morning training run and we saw his Video shoot.
On the second and third repeat just before I started back down I got to visit with him briefly.
One of the toughest little World Champion Boxers ever!
On my last descent I got a big smile and laugh out of him as I told him "How Much Heart he had"

In about four weeks Pacquiao is scheduled to meet WBC junior lightweight titleholder
Juan Manuel Marquez at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas. The second one we watched Brady's Audition for the Show as we ate lunch.

I'm still trying to connect the dots on the start of my new Life and learning about my Donor.

Stephen told me the Network had made a commitment for 26 shows.

How everyone on the show Loved Brady,
especially The Ladies!

And how the Show's Management felt Brady was that the very special Fresh New Face ( a 20 year over night success.) And how Brady was so excited about his first huge Break for a Bright Future.

He told me about the Special Energy Brady had and how things evolved!

The final part we shot as Stephen and I walked along the Santa Monica Beach talking about many things.

That fateful day in February 2000 when Brady had his Freak Accident.

You know the rest!

As a great match in Blood Type and Body size I had the Heart of A World Champion Person, Brady Michael's!

God has blessed me so and I now train, work, live and smile each and every day because

The Road To Escape. We are in!

It's Saturday here in the US. After a beautiful Warm bunch of days we hit two or three days of Rain & Cold. Today the warmth begins again.
Yesterday after a long full day of work I visited our Sports Medicine Team for more corrective Work. Getting much stronger and in balance. But as I started new exercises up in the Gym I realized I'm still in the Sub Basement looking for the Pent House.
Many More things to work on.
Being way tired I decided to skip my Swim Session on an R & R day and try to get to bed Early for a change.
Some times Less is More.

With so much Flu going around I hit the Steam, Sauna & Whirlpool just to chill and relax.
Also a great Luncheon with the Scottsdale Quarterback Club.
Probably my next to last meeting as five Term President.

Hope to get two good rides in this weekend.

Get my packing and lots of work done as The Amgen Tour of Cali starts tomorrow.

Weds. AM we will leave Scottsdale for the Coast.
Left Coast as we call it!

Yesterday was good Hill Intervals. Looking at the Garmin GPS data after I see the Hill grades were pretty good but nothing like next week in Cali or in Escape in June.
Almost need to start my plan & packing for next Weds. Departure.

Second Day back in the Pool, Yea!

After an hour in the Gym on Weights, Core & Stretching it was off to my Sports Med. Team.
After our Team Doctor and two of his assistants worked on me I knew about my pain points and scar tissue.
They have minimized my pain from Rotator Cuff injury with great stretches.
I look forward to our next session on Friday.

Then it was off to the Pool for Day # 2 of my Swimming base training.
An our later I escaped the Pool with my first 2,500 Meter swim of the season.
I could still walk and talk.

Today is tough Hill repeats.
Hope to get out the door in the next hour.

The weather has been great.
As the rest of the US is in a wet deep freeze we have 75 to 80 F Beautiful Winter Days.

That's why I love the Desert.

One week until we leave for the Tour of Cali.

Yesterday we finished the pictures and Interview for a Feature Story Upcoming in the East Bay Magazine " Alive."
It should be Interesting.

Getting ready to go out for my ride, today two hours in different heart rate zones and high cadence start & finish.

A week from Weds. we will leave for the 2008 Amgen Tour of California.

Yesterday was a rest & recovery day but after work I finally made it to the Pool.

Nice 1,500 meter swim for my first day back in the Pool.

Not too sore today.

Hope you all are getting ready for Escape.

In lieu of local Cycling Time Trials on the 23 and Swim Meet on the 24 th I will continue my training for the upcoming season riding in Cali.
April 5 is El Tour De Phoenix with the
Tour For Tucson's Mountains April 27.
The season is almost here.
It looks like 75 F here today this PM.

I hate the cold.

With rain starting already looks like I will head to the Gym and ride inside.

Yesterday we had a good two hour ride up in the hills just north of my home.

We rode by the FBR Open Golf Tournament with about 600,000 spectators for the week.

The Super Bowl has brought about 200,000 to the Valley even the though the Stadium only seats 70,000. Not stop parties, Media, bad Traffic but great for the economy.

It's Super Sunday in Arizona.

The Temp is down about 10 degrees F from Normal & Rain so un Desert like!

Time flies as January is almost History.

So far so good, no injuries or crashes.

Today the Huge FBR Open Golf Tournament Begins and Sunday The Giants & Patriots in the Super Bowl.

Have not swam any laps yet but have been in the Pool to soak and chill after hard workouts.

Tonight is the Scottsdale All City Sports Banquet. We get to recognize the top Male & Female HS Athletes in all the Fall Sports. Should be Fun!

Tomorrow back to the Bike & Gym!

Looks like I will be Driving to the Amgen Tour of California with my friend Tony D. to Train in the AM and watch the top Bike Pro's in the World Race in the PM.

I need to begin planning for Friday February 22, 2008 besides its George Washington's Birthday it will be my 8 Year Transversary. So Special and precious just to contemplate.
While in LA I should get to meet and discuss a Film Documentary Project. We will see?

Thank God!
I completed our 30 Day 2008 Cycling Training Camp on Tuesday.
Now to prepare for upcoming races. Have not made it into the Pool yet to swim, just to soak & chill after hard rides or weights.
Monday night was our meeting with Tracy from Elite Racing who puts on the PF Chang's Rock & Roll Marathon.
They have 37,000 entered and tomorrow is the Race Expo. Hope to get there before gym & bike.
It looks like Sunday I will escort the Lead Wheel chair Athlete. One fellow entered has done 1:39 for the Marathon.
Last year the Wheel Chair winner was 1:57 and to put it in perspective Gabe ran 2:04 in Berlin in September to set the current World Record.

It will be Cold that AM at the start. 45F or so in town but probably about 35 F and windy near the State Capital Down Town.

Should be Fun & Exciting!
Saw my Sports Medicine Doc yesterday after second workout and he his all set to be at Escape with his Gorgeous Wive!
He will be a great help before during and after the event weekend, working on our Team!

Just got back from two hours of Hills.
Big rain storms are heading this way.
Thank God I missed them!
Yesterday it was 76 F here on the Desert, not bad for the dead of Winter.
It is heading back to the 50's & rain this week!
Wednesday in strong gust head winds got in a good 50 Miler up in Cave Creek, about 67K.
So far so good. Hope to make it to the Pool tomorrow!
A week from tomorrow is the PF Chang's Rock & Roll Marathon.
Probably will escort the top Wheel Chair Athlete again in the Marathon about ten minutes in front of the Horde! What a great major event. The race Expo is one of the largerst & best anywhere!

Years sometimes start slow and then go int Hyper Drive. I'm getting the Feeling that 2008 will be all @ Super Warp Speed!
I think I can handle it.
It is supposed to get up to 7o F here today. If so not bad for Dead of Winter.
It has been cold! Hoping to get a 2.5 hour ride this PM with my old friend Tony Drake up in Cave Creek. We used to train and race here and Tucson together!
Today will be # 25 of my 2008 Training Camp. Other than eating the Profits. All is good!
Back to work so I can escape later for my ride.

Another Cold day on the Desert. This morning below freezing in the outlying areas around Scottsdale. Thank God it will warm up to high 50's later and then get back into the high 60's later this week. No fun riding out in the cold. Friday will be day # 22 of 30 days for Training Camp 2008.
After work today I get visit with my son Billy and then watch the Holiday Bowl from San Diego. At 6 PM ASU 10-2 on the season will play Texas 9-3. Should be a great game!
I'm guessing our Brutal Summer Heat is hiding some where in Australia. If we are lucky we will get back to 70 plus F in February?
Til then I guess get used to the COLD! UGH!

It's hard to believe we hit 67 degrees F yesterday for XMas Eve. Other than Southern Florida most of the US is in a deep Freeze.

A bit windy & cool today but an hour on the bike then big Suns VS Lakers Game at 3PM from the Staples Center.

Thank God I live on the Desert! What is cold and wet to me is a joke in the rest of the US for Winter weather! Yesterday it was about 65 F in the PM. Training Camp goes well.
My Coach Deann B. of azcoaching.com is slowly preparing me for the major of events of 2008. My new Trek Madonne rides like a dream. Thank You Landis Cyclery and Trek!
I just put a new Fizik Carbon saddle on and what a comfort difference!
I guess you can wear out a saddle? So far my time on the Bike and Gym have been most productive. Last year at this time I was recovering from chest surgery and it is nice to be ahead of the game. New Years Eve Team Arizona will be helping out at the Midnight Madness event. Then January 13 th I will escort probably the lead Wheel Chair Athlete in the PF Changs Rock & Roll Marathon. End of February should be first local races on the Bike. Almost time to get back in the Pool and prepare for next summers Swim Events.
